Strengthening with CARBOrefit® procedure is straightforward. Certified contractors combine the individual components – CARBOrefit® fine-grained concrete and CARBOrefit® carbon reinforcing grids – into a complete system and apply it directly on the construction site.

Execution steps

Prior to strengthening, the surface of the existing concrete must be roughened to ensure good adhesion and effective load transfer. Roughening can be easily done using established methods such as high-pressure water jetting or abrasive blasting.

The strengthening process begins by spraying or laminating a 3−5 mm thin layer of fine-grained concrete onto the prepared concrete surface.

The first layer of carbon reinforcing grid is then embedded into the fresh cementitious matrix. This process is repeated until the desired number of reinforcement layers is achieved. At the end of the process, a covering concrete layer is applied that blends aesthetically with the existing structure. A typical strengthening layer is 10-20 mm thick.

Unlike conventional shotcrete, strengthening with carbon reinforced concrete eliminates the need for additional dowelling at the contact surface. This is possible thanks to the use of a special fine-grained concrete, the lightweight nature of the reinforcing grids, and the thin-layer design. The minimally invasive processing makes carbon reinforced concrete particularly gentle on existing structures and ideal for historic and listed concrete buildings.

The flexibility and light weight of the materials used make execution easy to carry out, especially when working overhead.This reduces the strain on the workforce,allowing for smaller crew sizes and highly efficient operations on the construction site.

With your proven expertise, you are authorized and capable of practically applying the CARBOrefit® procedure, effectively preserving and optimizing structures. With each project you undertake, the vision of "Preservation instead of Demolition" becomes a visible reality. You significantly contribute to the success of the CARBOrefit® procedure, and serve as a model for sustainable construction practices. In order to ensure the quality and safety of CARBOrefit® carbon reinforced concrete, in Germany the participation in training by the applicant for approval and certification by a recognised certification body is a mandatory requirement for contractors. The CARBOrefit® certificate of suitability is issued for 3 years at a time.
