Special constructional conditionsThe production hall of the bicycle manufacturer CANYON was built in 2008 in Koblenz and comprises a spacious production and logistics facility with adjoining administrative areas. As part of the further development of operations, it became necessary to strengthen the floor slab in certain areas. The aim was to increase the bending load-bearing capacity without adding additional dead loads to the existing structure.
Conventional rehabilitation methods such as concrete overlays or steel reinforcements would have involved significantly higher material consumption, longer construction times and more invasive interventions in the building structure. Instead, the decision was made to apply strengthening with CRC.
The measure involved targeted strengthening of the underside of the slab using a CRC layer only 16 mm thick, into which three layers of carbon reinforcement were embedded. With the low material usage and the high performance of CRC, the required increase in load-bearing capacity could be achieved with minimal layer thickness and without additional weight.
The work was carried out in October 2010 within a short construction window and without interrupting the production process. The project demonstrates how precisely and resource-efficiently existing structures can be adapted to new requirements using CRC – even under challenging boundary conditions.
