Naumburg (Saale) is home to one of the oldest, still existing iron-reinforced concrete bridges in Germany - the pedestrian bridge over the moat to Thainburg. Constructed in 1893, this bridge utilized iron-reinforced concrete, a novel material at the time, and is now a protected historic landmark. Due to constructional sealing defects along with a lack of maintenance measures, the structure has suffered corrosion damage over the last few decades. The CARBOCON GMBH project team developed a renovation concept and integrated it into the design process. The innovative repair method using CRC was chosen for reasons of material efficiency and design, allowing the standards and requirements of monumental preservation to be met. The slender structure was strengthened on both sides using one to two layers of carbon reinforcement grids, through which the durability could be restored. The only 6-10 mm thin strengthening layer of CRC eliminates the static deficit while preserving the original appearance of the structure.
