Project description

The Shed roof hall in Munich dates back to the 1950s and is one of the characteristic industrial buildings of its time. Its distinctive roof structure with the typical shed roofs had been exposed to weathering for decades. Over the years, increasing damage occurred in the existing concrete of the thin-walled roof shells, and their load-bearing capacity no longer met long-term requirements. For this reason, a comprehensive rehabilitation was carried out in autumn 2021. The objective was to preserve the historic substance while restoring the load-bearing performance, all under the strict requirements of monument protection. A structural strengthening using CRC was selected as the solution. A carbon reinforced concrete layer of approximately 10 mm thickness was applied to both the upper and lower surfaces of the roof shell. This minimally invasive measure enabled a significant increase in load-bearing capacity without altering the slender structure or the architectural appearance of the hall. Thanks to this strengthening, the shed roof hall was not only preserved but sustainably secured for continued use in the decades to come.
