The ‘Kleine Schönbuschallee’ pedestrian and cycle bridge in Aschaffenburg is an arch bridge made of reinforced concrete, approximately 116 m long and 4 m wide, with a rectangular hollow cross-section and attached prestressed concrete girders. The structure, built in 1970, was statically deficient in its ability to carry transverse bending loads as a result of overloading and chloride exposure of the concrete. In order to avoid costly and complicated demolition and reconstruction, a maintenance concept using CRC was developed and successfully implemented in the summer of 2023. An approximately 15 mm thin layer of CRC with two layers of reinforcement was applied to compensate for the structural deficit and restore the durability of the bridge. In the bridge edge beam, a specially configured carbon reinforcement cage was used.
